Higher education often feels like a distant goal, but what if students could get a head start in college while still in high school and at an affordable price? Itineris Early College High School is redefining the traditional high school experience by guiding students on their journey to earn college credits and even an associate’s degree before graduation.

Founded with a vision, Itineris works tirelessly to make higher education more accessible and affordable, growing from a small biotechnology institution to a thriving academic hub. With innovative programs like their Internship program, a dynamic curriculum, and a commitment to career readiness, this school empowers students to bridge the gap between education and the workforce.
In this article, we’ll explore the evolution of Itineris, from its humble beginnings to its groundbreaking growth, and how it continues to shape the future of early college education.
The Origins of Itineris
Itineris Early College High School was originally founded under the Jordan School District with the initiative to make higher education more affordable and accessible to the youth. With the goal to provide students with the necessary guidance and resources to earn an associate’s degree while still in high school.
In 2003, after being awarded the prestigious Melinda Gates 21st Century Grant, Itineris officially opened in 2004 as a biotechnology institution under a district charter school on the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) campus. Initially only starting with 11th and 12th graders, the school’s primary incentive at the time was that students who achieved an Associates Degree would qualify for a New Century scholarship.

Growth and Expansion
After a decade, Itineris parted ways with the Jordan School District and gained authorization from the State of Utah and constructed its own designated building across the SLCC campus under its own district in 2014. Adding 10th grade to better prepare students for early college success.
Today, Itineris continues to evolve, increasing both student diversity and academic opportunities. Recently, the school has added 9th grade to its institution and constructed a new gymnasium. The curriculum has expanded beyond its original scope to include innovative electives such as Jujutsu, Coding, and Game Development, providing students with different interests a chance to explore through a well-rounded educational experience.

The Itineris Internship Program: Bridging Education and the Workforce
One of Itineris’ most impactful initiatives is its Internship Program, which offers students real-world experience in various industries. Consisting of two key components:
- Pre-Internship Course: A prerequisite class designed to equip students with the adequate soft skills needed to be a productive addition to a business or organization. This includes: resume building, cover letter writing, and interview techniques. Students not only gain confidence by practicing interviews with alumni and teachers, but it also ensures they stand out in competitive job markets.
- CTE Internship Course: A semester-long program where students engage in hands-on work experiences in a field of their choice, allowing them to take the initial steps to get in a specific industry and explore potential career paths before graduating.

A Decade of Internships: A Glimpse at Its History
The Internship Program began as an after-school program offered to Itineris in 2014. Originally designed to help students interested in tech and design fields obtain Internships to get a jumpstart in their careers. Later evolving into a full-semester course through the efforts of Renee Edwards, the principal who worked with the state of Utah to expand the program’s reach. Today, the program continues to provide invaluable career experiences for students in an assortment of fields.
